Vegan Caramel Apple Crumble Recipe

Vegan Caramel Apple Crumble

Preparation Time

– Prep time: 20 minutes
– Cook time: 40 minutes
– Total time: 1 hour
– Serves: 1 pie

Ingredients

Caramel sauce:
– 75 g non-dairy margarine
– 50 g plain white flour
– 120 ml water
– 75 g caster sugar
– 75 g light brown soft sugar

Apple filling:
– 3 medium to big apples (a rather sour variety is recommended)
– 25 g caster sugar
– 1 tsp cinnamon
– Pinch of salt
– 1 tsp vanilla extract

Crumble:
– 100 g oats
– 75 g caster sugar
– 50 g plain white flour
– Pinch of salt
– 75 g non-dairy margarine

Instructions

Step 1:
For the caramel sauce, melt the margarine in a small saucepan. Once fully melted, turn down the heat and add the flour. Mix and stir with a wooden spoon until well combined, aim for a thick paste without any lumps.

Step 2:
Add the water, caster sugar, and brown sugar to the saucepan and mix well. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes until the sugar has dissolved and isn’t grainy anymore. Do not let it start caramelising in the saucepan, it will caramelise once baked in the oven. Take it off the heat and set it aside until needed.

Step 3:
For the apple filling, core the apples and cut them into small slices. Place them into a big mixing bowl and add the sugar, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla extract and mix to combine. Stir in the thick caramel sauce and transfer the apple filling into a pie dish.

Step 4:
Pre-heat the oven to 180˚C.

Step 5:
For the crumble, add the oats, flour, sugar, and salt to a mixing bowl and combine. Add the margarine and use your fingers to massage the butter into the oat mixture until a crumble forms. Sprinkle the crumble onto the apple filling.

Step 6:
Pop the dish in the oven for 35-40 minutes until the crumble starts turning a light golden brown and you can see the caramel bubble up on the sides.

Step 7:
Serve hot with a scoop of dairy-free vanilla ice cream or whipped coconut cream. Enjoy!
